Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem was started in the year 1966. Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem was started during the Third Five Year plan in the year 1966 and is located on a beautiful 162 hectares site surrounded by hills. This was then the third government engineering institution in Tamil Nadu.

Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem is located in Salem, Tamil Nadu. Computing Facility of College comprises 1500 networked PCs. A 2 – km fiber optic cable has been laid to interlink department computer centers, hostels, staff quarters and guest house. All latest software is made available in all the departments. The open – access to 22 Mbps internet at every department is part of an extensive information network connecting the campus. Wi-Fi facility has been provided in the girl’s hostel.
Digital library of Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem is well constructed in a plinth area of 942.28 m2.It has a video conferencing hall and nourishes the emerging Engineers with collective updates of recent technologies. The students browse, download and share documents and access reputed e-journals.
Laboratories of Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem an open – access language laboratory equipped with audio interactive and multimedia enhanced learning packages, is available to hone communication skills for English. Also it is facilitated with LCD screen, Projector and three LCD TVs in an air-conditioned, interiorly decorated class room. Laboratories of College have well equipped state- of-the-art laboratories for conducting practical classes for all six disciplines of Engineering, Sciences and Language.
Accommodation of Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem students are supported with good board and lodging facilities. The Boys' hostel comprises six buildings and is provided with uninterrupted water and power supply. Clean and individual mess halls cater to students of each year. The Girls' hostel is located in a closed and secured compound; 24 hour security service ensures their safety. The hostel is equipped with 4 solar water heaters, a fully functional RO plant, well furbished gym and steam cooking. A Wi-Fi corridor ensures uninterrupted and fast internet facility in the safety of the hostel campus.
Sports facility of Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem vast grounds for Hockey, Foot ball and Cricket, well maintained courts of standard metrics for Volley ball, Basket ball, Hand ball, Ball Badminton, Tennis, Shuttle, Kabadi and Kho-Kho, Table Tennis and a well equipped gym are the hallmark of the sports facilities available in the institution.Extra Activities of Government College of Engineering – GCE Salem social awareness and the voluntary service of the students are motivated through NSS (National Service Scheme), which itself is divided into four units. Students serve the nearby villages every year through Special camps.
