The Government Law College-GLC is one of the oldest and most distinguished law college established in 1855. The college has been affiliated with the University of Bombay since 1860 in fact it is older than the University of Bombay and the Bombay High Court itself. The Government Law College-GLC located in Mumbai, India. If one looks back over the years, One becomes aware of the immeasurable role this pioneering law institution has played in the judicial, political, social life and historical background of India.


Government Law College-GLC celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2006.The name, 'Government Law School' was changed to the 'Government Law College' in the year 1925.The Government of India instituted two permanent professorships. The first batch of students of the LL. B. Examination included M. G. Ranade (one of the greatest social reformers and economists of the country). From 1855 - 95 the numerical strength of the GLS grew from 46 to 250 students. Seating space was so scarce in those days that the benches had to be brought in form the Elphinstone School Building nearby.


Government Law College-GLC is situated in the busy, bustling area of Churchgate. The college houses huge classrooms on the ground, second and third floors along with the library, auditorium, canteen, etc. The college now has an annexe building with additional classrooms, seminar rooms and a library.


Library-This is the place where the students of Government Law College-GLC throng. It is a centre of great activity in GLC. The Harilal J.Kania library and Reading room on the third floor can actually boast of maximum attendance. The library has a massive collection of books on virtually every topic a law student would require (you may have some problem in finding what you want, but eventually you will find it!) And the library subscribes to a large number of journals and reports. The library is the centre for all kinds of research, study and even animated discussions about controversial topics.


Auditorium or Audi as it is affectionately called, is where the major programs and functions of the college take place - like the Inaugural function, the Chagla lecture series, other cultural events and the Annual Day.


Government Law College-GLC has arranged for accommodation for the male students in the Government Colleges Hostel, at Backbay Reclamation on 'C' road, Churchgate. There are two girls' hostels - Savitridevi hostel and Telang Smarak Girls hostel offer accommodation to female students of various colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University. For admission to the hostel, the students need to apply separately. Admission to the college DOES NOT guarantee accommodation in the hostel.


Government Law College-GLC offers three years and five years courses and Postgraduate Diploma course in Securities Law. The Moot Court Association of Government Law College was inaugurated in February 1955 by the then Hon'ble Education Minister, Mr. Dinkar R. Desai, under the aegis of Principal Mr. K. R. Mehta. The concept of a 'moot court' is a universal co-curricular activity that is pursued and recognized by law colleges worldwide. In recognition of Mooting as an imperative co- curricular activity, the members of the Moot Court Association work unstintingly to promote and encourage mooting in Government Law College. The College has one of the most effective and dynamic Moot Court Associations.


Government Law College-GLC welcomes a large number of top legal firms, corporates, advocates and counsels who recruit the students of GLC. Many students have been placed with the top legal firms of India. In 2003-2004 , more than thirty students out of the 130 who had applied were selected during the Placement Week.
