On the recommendations of the Central Sanskrit Commission appointed by the Government of India during 1950s, a Central Sanskrit Institute was established at Tirupati in 1961 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in partial fulfilment of the recommendations, for the preservation and propagation of Traditional Sanskrit learning combining it with the modern methods of research. The Government of India constituted an autonomous registered body called ‘Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha Tirupati Society’ for the administration of the institution. The foundation stone for the
Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati was laid by the then Vice-President of India , Dr.S. Radhakrishnan on 4th January, 1962. About forty two acres of land at the foot of the Seven Hills, Tirumala was leased out by the T.T.D. Trust, then headed by Executive Officer, Dr.C.Anna Rao along with a munificient donation of Rs.10 lakhs towards construction of buildings.
The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati society has had a galaxy of successive chairmen who were well known public figures – Sri Patanjali Sastry, former Chief Justice of India being the first, followed by Prof.V.Raghavan, a reputed Indologist and Sri M.Ananthasayanam Ayyangar, former Speaker of Lok Sabha. Dr. B.R. Sharma was the Founder, and also acted as the Director from 1962 to 1970. Later the post of Director was changed into that of Principal. Sri Venkata Raghavacharya, Dr.Mandan Mishra, Dr.R.Karunakaran, Dr. M.D. Balasubramanyam and Prof. N.S. Ramanuja Tatacharya served the institution in various capacities. Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha came under the aegis of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan– an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education in April, 1971. Despite the challenges of the modern world, it has grown from strength to strength as a premier Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati for Sanskrit learning and research in India. During the Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1987, Sri P.V.Narasimha Rao, the then Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India announced the decision of the Government to elevate its status to that of a Deemed University.
The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati was declared as a Deemed to be a University on the recommendations of the U.G.C under Section 3 of UGC Act by the Government of India in its Gazette dated 16 - 11- 1987, No. F.9-2/85 U-3. The Deemed University was formally inaugurated by the then President of India Sri R. Venkataraman on 26th August, 1989. The Vidyapeetha started functioning as a Deemed University from the academic year 1991 - 92. Since then we have had three eminent Chancellors – M. M. Sri Pattabhirama Sastri,Prof.Ramaranjan Mukherjee and Dr.V.R.Panchamukhi(two terms), and the Vice-Chancellors were Prof.N. S. Ramanuja Tatacharya, Prof.S. B. Raghunathacharya and Prof.D.Prahladachar. Now Prof. Harekrishna Sathapathy took over as Vice-Chancellor.
The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati is now headed by Dr.J.B.Patnaik serving as the Chancellor and Prof. Harekrishna Sathapathy as the Vice-Chancellor of the Vidyapeetha. The Vidyapeetha having a sprawling campus of 42 acres is located at the foot of the Tirumala Hills the abode of Lord Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) near Alipiri. The Vidyapeetha campus, adjacent to SVIMS (Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences), is at a distance of 4 km. away from Railway Station and A.P.S.R.T.C. Bus Stand. It can be approached through Reservoir Road or Balaji Colony. Vidyapeetha offers different kind of graduate, post graduate, Certificate course leading to Arts streams.
The motto of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati chosen from Brihadaranyakopanishad as engraved on its emblem Tamasoma jyotirgamaya (lead me unto light from darkness) explicitly focuses on the central purport of education and also speaks of the vision and the idealism for which the Vidyapeetha was established. In addition to one Academic Building, one Library and two hostel buildings, several new buildings have been constructed after becoming a Deemed University. They include: new Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati building for Department of Education; a three-storied Ladies Hostel (Padmachala); Guest House; Indoor Stadium; Administrative Building; construction of type I, type II, type III, type IV and type V quarters, Garudachala Hostel and a three-storied second Ladies Hostel Building (Vidyachala). Besides, construction of Neelachala Boys Hostel is in progress. Foundation stone has been laid for the construction of Simhachala Research Scholars’ Hostel, recently. Further, as a part of the beautification of the campus, all internal roads in the campus have been laid and greenery is ensured by planting tree saplings and developing lush green gardens.
The University is equipped with Multi-media Language Laboratory to develop language learning skills of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati students with the help of language technologies. Besides, the university is also equipped with psychology laboratory where the mental aptitude of students would be tested and trained by experts. It accommodates the Sansk-Net Lab where in the old Shastras and Rare Manuscripts of Sanskrit are keyed into electronic media in collaboration with other Sanskrit and technical institutions with the special assistance of the MHRD and UGC.
The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati has multipurpose Indoor stadium wherein Indoor games and Aerobic exercises can be practiced by the students and staff. The Indoor stadium is equipped with 16 stationed - GYM - Thread Mill, Table Tennis Tables, Tennicoit courts etc. for the use of students and staff. The Vidyapeetha has sufficient and well furnished class-rooms with well furnished furniture for the conduct of classes for various courses. At present the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati is able to provide class-room accommodation for 1000 students.
The Institute of Advanced Studies in Education Building for exclusively for the students of the B.Ed and M.Ed. The building is consists of class rooms, Language Laboratory, Psychology Laboratory, Library etc. The university felt the need of computer literacy for Sanskrit, relevance of Indian Language Technologies (heavily depends on the Sanskrit Grammar), introduction of emergent areas and new Technologies to the Sanskrit students of Rashtriya Sanskrit. Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati , it requested UGC to establish a Department of computer Science and Introduced computer education at Prak-sastri (Inter mediate), Sastri (Graduate) level. The Electronic Class room is established for the use of computer aided teaching, Human biology in the yogavijanan class using the modern technology. The Vidyapeetha has Four Hostels - Three for Boys and One for Girls accommodating around 900 students. The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha – Tirupati has students - managed messes for the inmates of the hostels, where in meals is provided on confessional rates. Two more hostels for Research scholars & boys and one more hostel for girls are under construction. A Gymnasium with 16 multiple workstations has been installed in the indoor stadium of the University to facilitate the all-round.
