Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai was founded by Homi J. Bhabha on 1st June 1945 with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. It initially started function in Bangalore, and then later that year, it moved to Mumbai (then Bombay). Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai changed various location before moving to its present campus in Colaba. It is funded primarily by the Government of India. For most of its history, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai had been affiliated to the University of Mumbai but like all other premier research institutes in the country it has always enjoyed academic and administrative autonomy. It attained the official deemed university status in June 2002. To meet the ever growing demand of space needed for research labs and accommodation institute is coming up with a new campus at Hyderabad.
The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai is an autonomous Institute under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India. We do basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer science. We have campuses in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore and research facilities in various other places in India. We have master's and doctoral programs in our fields of work.
The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai Archives stores the collective memory of the institute by preserving papers, documents, photographs, sound recordings that tell the history of the Institute from 1945 to the present. Researchers will find here a wealth of resources for the history of science in India.
The idea of separate Archives for Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai was proposed in 1995-96 during the Institute's golden jubilee celebrations. The collection process began in 2002 when Mr J.D. Isloor, formerly Scientific Officer in the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai Radio Astronomy Group started collecting documents. The same year, Dr. Indira Chowdhury, on sabbatical from Jadavpur University and based at NCBS, Bangalore started an oral history project on Biology at TIFR. In 2004, Dr. Indira Chowdhury, J.D. Isloor and Vrunda Pathare began a systematic collection for the TIFR Archives which has since grown. At present, Ms Oindrila Raychaudhuri is Assistant Archivist and Ms Ananya Dasgupta, Consultant Editor for the Oral History project, while Dr Indira Chowdhury continues to guide the project as Consultant Archivist.
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai Computer Centre is responsible for providing computing and networking facilities to TIFR users and groups. Computing has become an essential tool for almost all scientific research. At Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai , computers are extensively used both in scientific computation as well as in preparation and publication of scientific papers. Scientific data and papers on research carried out by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai members are archived on computers, often in a form accessible over the network. Moreover, most scientists make a heavy use of Internet and email facilities for scientific literature access and collaboration. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai also uses computers for processing of administrative and accounting data.
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai local area network consists of about 1200 workstations and servers interconnected by a backbone of fiber optic cable that interconnects switches in various institutes blocks. These block switches are connected by 100 mbps UTP cable to department switches from where UTP connections are provided to individual machines. The workstations are mainly used for scientific computing, web and email access and for scientific publication. Servers provide access to scientific data and papers. Institute's Administrative Data Processing cell has machines that keep institutes accounting and administrative data. TIFR library runs a server providing online access to library catalogs and electronically subscribed journals. TIFR LAN provides the interconnectivity between these machines.
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai LAN is connected to Internet by a 34Mbits/sec link to ISP Tata Communications. The connection is through a WAN router which also connects remote centres of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai such as the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education and National Centre for Radio Astronomy through leased telephone links. This provides full Internet access to Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai members.
The central computing facility consists of some general purpose computing machines as well as some machines dedicated to providing high end computing facilities. With the advent of cheap and powerful workstations, many groups and users in Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai have their own facilities for computing.
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai Sports Club was established in 1960 with the objective to encourage, promote and organize sports activity for the benefit of the members of the Club. Since its inception Tata Institute of Fundamental Research – TIFR Mumbai Sports Club has been actively involved in encouraging, promoting and organizing indoor, outdoor games and social & cultural activities for the benefit of its members.
