The village of Yorkville was formed in 1853 as a middle-class suburb of the city, with Victorian Mews homes, picturesque gardens, and quiet streets. The village existed as a separate political entity with its own town hall and coat of arms until 1883 when it was annexed by the quickly-expanding City of Toronto. The area remained residential until the early 1950s when many small specialty shops (that were being pushed out by large development projects downtown) relocated to Yorkville.
The School of Makeup Art-SOMA Toronto During the 1960s, Yorkville became the centre of Toronto's hippie culture. Flower children from across North America flocked to the area to visit the many coffee houses, and watch musicians such as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot begin their careers. Now a trendy shopping and dining area, many of the charms that have helped Yorkville thrive since the 1850s are still present. The streets are lined with beautifully restored Victorian homes, some converted into outdoor cafes, antique shops, art galleries, designer boutiques, and restaurants. The area is linked by hidden laneways, and features cobblestone courtyards with rustic-styled lamp posts and wrought iron park benches.
