University of Adelaide – Roseworthy was established on 6 November 1874 after a £20,000 donation by grazier and copper miner Walter Watson Hughes. It is the third oldest university in Australia. The first Chancellor was Sir Richard Hanson and the first Vice-Chancellor was Dr Augustus Short. The first degree offered was the Bachelor of Arts and the University started teaching in March 1876. In 1881, the University of Adelaide was the first Australian university to admit women to science courses and its first female graduate was Edith Emily Dornwell. The great hall of the University of Adelaide, Bonython Hall, was built in 1936 following a donation from the owner of The Advertiser newspaper, Sir Langdon Bonython.

University of Adelaide – Roseworthy campus is home to the State Government's Constellation in Animal Science, a major player in several Cooperative Research Centres (including Pork CRC, Poultry CRC, Beef CRC and Bio-remediation); and the JS Davies Beef Cattle Research Centre. The Head of School - Animal and Veterinary Sciences is Professor Gail Anderson who runs Bone Biology. The Deputy Head - Animal and Veterinary Sciences is Professor Phil Hynd who runs Cutaneous biology. He has also been involved in the Sheep CRC, developing improved techniques for mulesing sheep. Australian Grain Technologies Pty Ltd (AGT) is the largest cereal breeding company in Australia and one of the largest in the world, and has made Roseworthy the centre of its national operations.
University of Adelaide – Roseworthy is once again leading the way in servicing the vitally important agricultural sector of Australia. Roseworthy Campus has been reinvigorated with the establishment of a highly-successful Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, attracting more than 50 students per year and building on this success, an annual intake of approximately 60 students in Veterinary Science. The Roseworthy and Waite campuses are recognised as centres of excellence in agricultural science and this reputation underpins the Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences.
