Bangor University was founded as the University College of North Wales. It opened its doors on 18 October 1884 in an old coaching inn with 58 students and 10 members of staff. The students received degrees from the University of London until 1893 when the University of Wales, Bangor became one of the three original constituent colleges of the University of Wales. Bangor University was founded as a direct result of a campaign in the late nineteenth century for higher education provision in Wales. Funds were raised by public subscription to establish a college of university rank in Bangor. An important feature of its foundation was the voluntary contributions made by local people, including farmers and quarrymen, from their weekly wages over a period of time.

Bangor University was originally based in an old coaching inn called the Penrhyn Arms. In 1903, the city of Bangor donated a 10-acre site overlooking the city at Penrallt for a new building, and substantial sums of money were raised by local people to help meet the cost. The foundation stone for this was laid in 1907, and four years later in 1911 the main building was opened, together with some arts and social science buildings and part of the Library. The Science Departments remained in the Penrhyn Arms for another fifteen years. In 1926 they moved to new purpose-built accommodation which had been constructed with the assistance of funds raised by the North Wales Heroes Memorial.

Sport has always been an important part of the student experience at Bangor University. The first major development of modern sports facilities came in the 1960s and 1970s, at a time of great expansion in student numbers, with the construction of the original sports hall on the current Maes Glas site. At this time Bangor University also developed the Treborth site pitches. Further developments came in the 1990s with the addition of the Normal site sports facilities on the amalgamation of the Normal College and UCNW to form University of Wales, Bangor. A joint user agreement with Gwynedd Council also allowed the construction of the first class athletics facilities at Treborth. In 1998 Bangor University, in association with Sportslot, were able to develop the £1.65 million Maes Glas Sports Centre. This facilty offers some of the finest equipment in North Wales and is open to both the staff and students of Bangor University and the General Public.

Bangor University has a legal responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK. For academic and research vacancies or those that require highly specialized skills and qualifications, we will often be able to obtain a work permit for a suitably qualified applicant who is not currently eligible to work in the UK, if there are no suitable ‘resident’ (i.e. European Economic Area – EEA) candidates. For vacancies that are not academic, research or highly specialist, it is extremely unlikely that a work permit would be granted. In such cases we will therefore be unable to consider an application from someone who is not currently eligible to work in the UK.
