The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology-CCMB is a premier research organization in frontier areas of modern biology. The objectives of the Centre are to conduct high quality basic research and training in frontier areas of modern biology, and promote centralized national facilities for new and modern techniques in the inter-disciplinary areas of biology, CCMB was set up initially as a semi-autonomous Centre on April 1, 1977 with the Biochemistry Division of the then Regional Research Laboratory (presently, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, IICT) Hyderabad forming its nucleus and Dr P M Bhargava heading the new Centre. Earlier, the Governing Board of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) New Delhi, the apex body which constituted 44 research institutions in the country, approved the proposal in 1976 to establish such a Centre in view of the importance of research in the frontier and multi-disciplinary areas of modern biology. During 1981-82, the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology-CCMB was accorded the status of a full-fledged national laboratory with its own Executive Committee and Scientific Advisory Council. With major expansion plans, it was decided to relocate the Centre to a spacious campus. To provide centralized facilities in the country for new and modern techniques in the inter-disciplinary areas of biology, and to ensure that these facilities are so organized, maintained and administered that they can be put to maximal use by research workers from other laboratories and institutions in the country.Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology is situated in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located at the Habshiguda cross road leading to Uppal.
Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology-CCMB offers a host of world-class facilities to students that include Highly advanced research laboratories, State-of-the-art computer facility, Comfortable accommodation facilities, Extensive library with a comprehensive collection of books, journals and magazines on all issues related to rural development, World-class Auditorium & Conference facilities, Canteens offering multicuisine menus and Recreation Facilities. Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology shares a well-organized library with the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT). The library has an extensive collection of resource material in the fields of modern biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, and related areas, comprising 41,961 books, 58,111 bound volumes of periodicals and 1,85,000 Indian Patent Specifications. Full-text Indian and American Standards are available on CD-ROM. In addition to several volumes of classical journals dating back to the 19th century, complete sets of Science Citation Index (from 1945) and Chemical Abstracts (from 1907) are available.The library subscribes to 470 print journals and over 1300 titles of online journals. Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology-CCMB has access to about 4,000 e-journals. The library has an in-house bindery, reprographic facility, good Internet connectivity and a security surveillance system. To facilitate the stay of trainees coming from all over the country and abroad, the CCMB offers comprehensive accommodation facilities that come with all required services for a comfortable stay. The rooms of the hostel are well furnished and offers host of services for the students.
Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology-CCMB imparts training to doctoral students in an academic program linked to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Besides, the Centre also trains post-doctoral fellows though training programs sponsored by CSIR, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, New Delhi. On an average at any given point of time there are over 100 such researchers at the CCMB, including guest workers from various institutions. The students enrolled in academic programs require to have strong motivation to pursue research in modern biology leading to a Ph.D degree. The projects offered for Ph.D cover specialized areas of Biotechnology and Biomedicine,Genetics and Evolution, Cell Biology and Development, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics, Infectious Diseases, and Bioinformatics and Theoretical Biology. Besides the doctoral and post-doctoral programs, the CCMB also conducts regular workshops, a 2-week international training program (during the last week of February), and several technology awareness programs, every year.
