Islamiah College – Vellore is a symbol of devotion to education and love for learning of the Muslims of Vaniyambadi who in their zeal for translating into action the message of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, established the Vaniyambadi Muslim Educational Society in 1901, and Islamiah Elementary School was started in 1903. The phenomenal growth of the school was due to the untiring and dedicated services and leadership of Janab T.Hajee Badruddin Sahib, Janab Malang Hayath Batcha Sahib, Janab T.Ameenuddin Sahib and Janab Malang Ahmed Batcha Sahib. The full-fludged Islamiah High School came into being in 1912. In 1916, the society resolved to establish Islamiah College and the foundation stone of the College was laid by His Excellency Lord Pentland, the then Governer of Madras Province. With princely donations from the Muslim philanthropists, Islamiah College – Vellore was started in 1919 and got recognition from July 1921. The building in which the College is housed at present was opened by Nawab C.Abdul Hakeem Sahib who gave a munificent donation of Rs. 50,000 to the Society.

In 1946, Islamiah College – Vellore was upgraded as a Degree College offering two year degree courses in B.A Economics and B.Com. In 1954, B.A Group1(b) Mathematics was started. In 1956, the College got affiliation for the pre-university and the three year degree courses, B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com., were started in 1957. The University accorded permission to start B.Sc. Zoology and B.A. History in 1967. M.A. History was started in 1974, M.Com. in 1975, and M.Sc. Mathematics in 1976.

Consequent upon the shedding of the Pre-university Course with effect from 1980, Islamiah College – Vellore offers instructions for Degree and Postgraduate Courses only. The College has further introduced new courses like B.Sc. Branch III Physics Major in 1981-82 and B.A. Branch XV Corporate Secretaryship in 1982-83 and in the year 1983-84, the College got affiliation in B.A. Industrial Organisation (Leather), a rural-based job-oriented course suggested by the College to the University. B.Sc. Brach XI Biochemistry was started in 1985-86. Islamiah College – Vellore has been recognised as a research institution for Ph.D. in Commerce from the academic year 1986-87. During 1986-87, the College further introduced M.Phil. Course (Full Time) in Commerce and M.Sc. Chemistry. The College got affiliation for M.Phil. (Part time) in Mathematics and B.Sc. Computer Science in 1988-89 and for M.Phil. (Part Time) in History in 1993-94 and Ph.D. in History in 1996.

Islamiah College – Vellore got affiliation for M.Sc. Biochemistry in the year 1998-99 under self-financing scheme. The College has introduced M.Sc. Computer Science during 1999-2000 under self-financing scheme. The College got affiliation for M.Phil. (Full Time) Mathematics in 2000-01. The College has introduced UGC supported vocational subject Biotechnology in the year 2001-02 under B.Sc. Degree (Non-Semester) courses in Biochemistry, Chemistry and Zoology.

Islamiah College – Vellore had a humble beginning in 1919 has now grown up to a full-fledged P.G. and Research Institution catering to the needs of the rural lot who would have otherwise not dreamt of taking a Research Degree. Now the Management has come forward to introduce new courses in the Evening College. The College has started functioning as Day College and Evening College from the month of August 1999. The Evening College offers Self-Financing courses in M.Sc. Physics, M.Sc. Computer Science and B.C.A., and thus Islamiah College – Vellore is bound to expand by leaps and bounds and is destined to take a great leap forward in the new courses (Both Aided and Self-Financing). M.Phil. (Chemistry) and B.C.A. Computer Applications were started in 2000, Ph.D. Chemistry and Mathematics in 2005, M.Phil. Physics in 2007, M.Phil. Biochemistry in 2009, B.A. English Literature, B.Sc. Software Computer Science, M.A. English Literature, M.Sc. Biotechnology and Ph.D. in Physics in 2010.

Islamiah College – Vellore is situated at Newtown, Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu. It is, in an area surrounded by tanneries, big and small, has provided Leather Chemistry as an application-oriented subject for B.Sc. Branch IV Chemistry main. Consequent to the establishment of Thiruvalluvar University, our College has been affiliated to this new University from the academic year 2003-04. The College has earned for Vaniyambadi a place in the educational map of India. It is located amidst green fields and wide spaces presenting a natural environment. Its well-ventilated, spacious lecture halls, well-equipped laboratories, good library, Dr. Allama Iqbal Auditorium and the imposing two-storeyed Malang Endowment Hostel speak volumes for the interest of the Muslim Community of Vaniyambadi in providing facilities for higher education. The College was accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade during 2004-2009.

Islamiah College – Vellore keeps its portals open to the members of all castes and communities. From its very inception it has drawn members in its establishments, staffs and students from all communities. The aim of the College is to foster in the teachers and students, and through them in society generally, the attitudes and values needed for developing "good life" in individuals and society.

The Library was established in the formative years of Islamiah College – Vellore It witnessed the College cross one milestone after another to become a mammoth monolith with more than 50,000 books on its shelves relating not only to the subjects taught in the College but also rare collections on philosophy, logic, politics and languages. The Library functions on the basis of Open Access System in which the students and staff have facilities for unlimited usage of the treasure trove. The College provides ample scope and opportunity to the students to read and learn a lot from a wide variety of newspapers, magazines and periodicals available in the Reading Room. Islamiah College – Vellore subscribes to 150 national and international periodicals and magazines, and 11 newspapers. Many of the important journals are bound and preserved. The College has a Video Library with video cassettes and CDs on various topics of current interest. For the benefit of the staff, postgraduate students and research scholars, the Library has a Computer Centre with internet facility.

Over the years Islamiah College – Vellore has distinguished itself in the field of sports and games. During the last 91 years sportsmen and players have brought laurels to the College in various events at the inter-collegiate, district, university, zonal, state and national levels. Many of our sportsmen at present occupy important positions I the Government, public and private sectors. The extraordinary performance of our sportsmen is partly due to the keen interest shown by the College authorities in providing all the facilities and the dynamic endeavours of successive physical directors. Islamiah College – Vellore gives equal importance to sports and games besides academics. In admissions to various courses special weightage is given to sportsmen of caliber. The College has ample facilities for both indoor and outdoor games. Adequate facilities for indoor games such as Table Tennis, Carrom and Chess are available. Islamiah College – Vellore has two big grounds which are utilized for Cricket, Hockey, Football and athletic events. Separate courts have been provided for Ball Badminton, Volley Ball, Basket Ball and Lawn Tennis. A multi-specialty Gym adds a new dimension to the sports facilities of the College.

The National Cadet Corps Senior Division, Army Wing was started in Islamiah College – Vellore in 1957 to develop qualities of character, courage, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure and sportsmanship and the ideal of selfless service among the youth to make them useful citizens; and to create a human resource of organized, trained and motivated youth, to provide leadership in all walks of life including Armed Forces, and be available for the service of the nation. The National Service Scheme of our College has been in the forefront of activities like literacy drive, adult education, flood relief, shramdan, ecology awareness, rural development, social development, health drive, human rights education, afforestation, campus cleaning, rain water harvesting, national integration, campaign against AIDS, Pulse Polio Programme, Blood Donation Camps, and a host of other programmes.
