Lakehead University - Orillia evolved from Lakehead Technical Institute founded in 1946 and Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology (founded 1957). Lakehead Technical Institute was established on June 4, 1946, by an Order-in-Council of the Province of Ontario. Classes commenced in January 1948, in temporary rented quarters in downtown Port Arthur. In September of that same year, the first university courses were added to the curriculum. Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology was established by an Act of the Ontario Legislature proclaimed on August 1, 1957.Years later, the original Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology Act was amended to grant the college authority to establish new faculties, and confer degrees in arts and sciences. Lakehead University - Orillia Act, 1965, was given royal assent on June 22, 1965, and came into force on July 1, 1965. The Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology, thereafter known as " Lakehead University - Orillia," was continued under this new charter. The first degrees were conferred on May 5, 1965.
In September 2006, Lakehead University - Orillia opened a new campus in downtown Orillia, Ontario. The Lakehead University - Orillia campus has an enrollment of over 900 students at its present location (as of 2010). In January 2008, the City of Orillia donated 85 acres (340,000 m2) of land originally slated to become an industrial park. The donated land would be the site for the new campus located just off of Highway 11. Construction of the Lakehead University - Orillia new campus began in Spring 2009 supported by $13 million in Government infrastructure funding. The new facility is a technology enabled(No Wireless Internet) learning environment that includes science and computer laboratories, library facilities, offices, and meeting areas. To minimize environmental impact, the facility is Canada's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum university campus. The Lakehead University - Orillia campus is expected to accommodate over 1200 students in the initial phases of development.
Lakehead University - Orillia library includes The Chancellor Paterson Library, which is the main library for the University, the Education Library, which primarily serves the Faculty of Education, and the Orillia Campus Library. The total collection contains over 390,000 book titles, over 20,000 electronic journals and conference proceedings and over 500,000 microform titles. The materials and resources within these libraries represent the largest research collection in Northwestern Ontario. Additional information is available in the various brochures available at the Reference Desk of The Chancellor Paterson Library. The Technology Services Centre (TSC) combines the skills, knowledge and equipment to provide Academic and Administrative Computing, Information Services, Voice and Data Communications and Multimedia Services in the areas of learning and research. A variety of Reference and Information Services are provided at the Reference Desk which is located on the Main Floor of The Chancellor Paterson Library. Librarians at the Reference Desk will assist students in the use of the Library's Online Catalogue, remote catalogues, indexes and other reference sources whether in print or electronic format.
Lakehead University - Orillia Heritage Place campus has two computer labs for students to use. Computers with 17-inch LCD flat screen monitors are loaded with office productivity software and course-specific applications. Full access to high-speed internet is included at each computer, which comes equipped with a DVD/CD-RW optical drive, a floppy drive, 8 USB ports and front-access audio jacks for headphones and microphone. Students of Lakehead University - Orillia are encouraged to use USB flash drives to store data, and these are available for purchase from our bookstore. High-speed laser printers are located in each computer lab and are accessible to every student with a valid ID and password. Students can also send colour print jobs from any computer on Lakehead University - Orillia campus and pick them up in the library. Printing costs are controlled through a print credit system. Students receive an initial $3.00 worth of print credits which can be used for black & white laser prints at 8¢ per page or for colour laser prints at 50¢ per page. They can buy additional print credits at the circulation desk in the library. Catering to the diverse needs of every individual student we welcome into our campus, Lakehead University - Orillia strives to accommodate the learning requirements of everyone through the availability of assistive devices and specialized computer hardware and software. Located in the Student Services office, the Learning Assistance Lab has four computers with ample room to study and do research. Every attempt has been made to make available the latest in assistive technology. There are four additional workstations in the Library for students to use. These computers include the same functionality as the computers in the other labs.
Lakehead University - Orillia new Academic Building on University Avenue is the first step in the development of a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum campus, the first of its kind in Canada. Lakehead Orillia's outstanding accomplishments over the past four years have allowed us to expand into a campus that combines our historic Heritage Place downtown setting with a new kind of facility - one that showcases our leadership in innovation and environmental sustainability.
Lakehead University - Orillia campus currently supports unique multidisciplinary undergraduate programs that combine arts/science studies with Concurrent Education in both honours and non-honours degree options (HBASc/BEd, BASc/BEd). In addition, a college transfer program in Business Administration enables 3-year diploma graduates to complete a B.Admin degree in one year. Other programs being offered at the Orillia campus include a 4-year honours Bachelor of Commerce (HBComm), a 3-year part-time Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a 1-year post-graduate degree in Social Work (HBSW).
