Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla , one of the oldest Syrian Christian Churches founded by St.Thomas in India, entered the realm of higher education by establishing a College in Tiruvalla, the Headquarters of the Church. The Church, which had pioneered many social and humanitarian projects, was thus responding to a dire need of the society in the field of higher education by founding Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla in 1952. The college grew fast, even beyond the dreams of founding fathers and now it is one of the most reputed Colleges in the state and is a glowing example of the vision of the Church and its commitment to the needs of the society.
Founded in 1952, Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla is one of the six institutions of higher learning administered by the Mar Thoma Church. The Church ventured into the field of higher education out of the firm conviction that it has a vital role to play in the task of moulding the lives of young men and women, who should prove themselves worthy before men and God and equipping them to meet the stern challenges of life. From a small beginning with 250 students and 12 teachers, the College has grown into a premier educational institution with 103 members on the teaching staff, 71 non-teaching staff and about 1500 students on the rolls today. Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan, the late Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Athanasius, the late Most. Rev. Dr. Alexander MarThoma Metropolitan, the late Mr. K. K. Kuruvilla and many others have contributed in no small measure to the growth and development of this institution over the years.
The late Most Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan, the late Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Athanasius , late Dr.Alexander Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan and the late Mr. K.K Kuruvilla and many others contributed in no small measure to the growth and development of this institution. The present Manager of the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla is Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius.From a small beginning with 250 students and 12 teachers, the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has grown into a premier educational institution with over 1500 students on the rolls,103 members on the teaching staff and 71 members on the non-teaching staff. It offers under-graduate courses in eleven disciplines, post-graduate course in eight and several non-formal courses. The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla also has six bonafide research departments offering full time research facility leading to Ph.D.
The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla undertakes extension and consultancy services as a part of its commitment to the society. Community development programmes like Medical Camps, Literacy Mission, Blood Donation, Environmental Awareness, Village Adoption, Communication Proficiency, Career Orientation, Tailoring & Handicraft Training, Setting up Language & Science Laboratories, Updating of Library services, Football Academy, Refresher Courses for School & College Teachers, Mushroom Cultivation, Surveys etc. are some of the activities in this domain. A Community Extension Cell functions in the college coordinating these activities.
The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has a well organized Parent-Teacher Association with a constitution of its own. The PTA usually meets twice a year. In addition to general P.T.A, the class P.T.As also function effectively. The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla gets much of its financial support through contribution raised by the Association from time to time.The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla lays utmost importance on co-curricular activities. In addition to the College Union which is statutory, the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has a number of clubs and societies, about which information is given in detail for the benefit of the students. Talented faculty members supervise the activities of these clubs and associations. Each departments has its own Subject Association which organizes various programmes related to their respective fields.
A unit of National Service Scheme has been functioning in the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla since 1971. It is a voluntary organization designed to create community consciousness in the students and to channelise their energy and enthusiasm into constructive paths. Presently the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has two units of National Service Scheme with a membership of about 300 students. The students participate in a series of community development projects including, 10 day work camp arranged every year during Christmas holidays. The NSS volunteers carry out regular campus beautification programmes, arrange blood donation, and participate in community development schemes in the locality. A Bonus of 15 marks for the Degree Course and 5 marks for PG Course shall be awarded to NSS Candidate at the time of admission.
NCC functions in the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla to develop character, comradeship, ideal service, leadership traits and to provide service training to young men and women. There are about 100 Cadets in the NCC unit of the College. Application for enrolment will be called for by the Officer-Commanding the unit at the beginning of each academic year. The cadets enrolled will undergo a minimum of 4 hours of training per week and attend an annual training camp of 14 days duration. Cadets who have the required attendance to their credit and have shown sufficient progress can appear for B and C Certificate Examinations conducted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at the end of the first and the third years of training respectively. Cadets are under no obligation to undertake active service but those cadets who have passed B and C certificate examinations will be given preference for joining the armed forces. The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla can now boast of a special unit comprising of women cadets also. Application forms for enrolment can be had from the NCC Office. Bonus marks are awarded to NCC Candidate at the time of admission.
The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has always given great importance to sports and games and its infrastructural facilities are made available to the local public and other institutions also. Facilities for all the major games and athletics are provided for both men and women. The students of the Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla are divided into different houses, which compete in healthy rivalry in Inter-House Tournaments in all major games. Traditionally the College has been a centre of excellence especially for football. The men and women teams in football are university champions for the last several years. For more than 40 years the College has been organizing Mar Thoma Trophy All Kerala Inter-Collegiate Foot ball Tournament for men teams. It has become a prestigious Trophy for which the best teams of the Colleges from all the Universities in Kerala compete. The Department of Physical Education also helps other Sports Associations in organizing various tournaments.The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has Sports Hostel for Women where free boarding and lodging are provided for sports persons with the assistance of the Kerala Sports Council. The Council also makes available the services of a State Coach to the students. Sports women are given free accommodation and food in the women hostel with management funding.
The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla has a strong Alumni Association with chapter in different parts of the world. They contribute liberally to the development projects of the college. The Mar Thoma College - Tiruvalla keep in touch with the Alumni through regular publication of the Alumni News. Various Chapters also have their own news bulletins.
