Shillong Polytechnic was established in the year 1965 and provides facilities for study in Diploma courses in Engineering after H.S.L.C. (10+). The main objectives of the Polytechnic courses of studies are to produce technician at supervisory level to meet the demand of Technician manpower in various fields of development. The Shillong Polytechnic aims at bringing out a guideline towards Technician Education to enable the young boys and girls within the state to build their career by getting themselves admitted into various courses of Technical Studies available at the State Polytechnic of Meghalaya.
To undertake its social responsibility, Community Polytechnic Scheme under the Government of India was extended to existing Shillong Polytechnic for the school dropout unemployed youths from rural areas, other disadvantaged group and women from community to continue their studies by joining the short term courses in the main center and four extension centers under the Community Polytechnic Scheme. The institute has been awarded with an ISO 9001-2000 Certificate in the year 2007.
Shillong Polytechnic is located at Mawlai Kynton Massar, Shillong – 8 which is approximately 5 km from the heart of the state capital, Shillong. The Institute is under the administrative and supervisory control of the Director of Higher & Technical Education, Meghalaya.
A full time pharmacist is present in the Shillong Polytechnic . Medical Specialists and pharmacies are just a stone’s throw away from the Institute.
The LRUC (Learning Resource Utilization Center) cell of the Shillong Polytechnic have just been set up at the ongoing period of the World Bank Project in order to cope up with the rapid advancement of Science and technology the center is equipped with most of the modern facilities of which were installed to guide the students as well as the staffs in their work.
The accommodation for the students is being fulfilled by the presence of the Hostels situated within the Shillong Polytechnic Campus. The Hostel accommodation is available for both boys and girls separately.
The student union conducts various sports and games, social and cultural activities during the Institute week. Activities of the student union include action programmes and awareness generation work related to promotion and preservation of environment, health care, national integration. An awareness program on environmental development is conducted where Shillong Polytechnic student volunteers organize and monitor the cleaning and greening activity in the institute. They observe the institute week with various programme including group discussions, debates befitting the occasion. Field trips are also organized for students and industrial tours prove very befitting for the final year students. Entrepreneurship development programmes are conducted which can offer career guidance to the students. Mock interviews are also conducted where people from the industry are invited.
Shillong Polytechnic offers diploma courses in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics Engineering. Under The World Bank Assisted Project Tech Ed III one new diploma course in computer Science and Engineering has been introduced from the current academic session 2002-2003. A post diploma course in Information Technology is likely to be introduced under the World Bank Assisted Project Tech Ed III from the academic session 2003-2004.
