National Institute of Technology - NIT Jamshedpur is a Deemed University of Jamshedpur and was originally founded as Regional Institute of Technology in 1960 by Dr. Srikrishna Sinha, the then chief minister of Bihar. Having been a freedom fighter himself, he chose the auspicious day of 15th August, 1960 to lay the keystone. Shortly upgraded to National Institute of Technology on 27th December, 2002, with the status of a Deemed University, it is now totally under the control of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, New Delhi since 1st April, 2003. The Institute has several departments in different disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized on a unique pattern of functioning.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Jamshedpur is located in the heart of the rich mineral and industrial belt of Jharkhand State, the campus encompasses the Main building, the Library, the Computer Center, 11 hostels (9 Boys’ hostels and 2 Girls’ hostels), staff quarters, Guest House, a Students’ Gymkhana, a Post-office, a branch of State Bank of India, an ATM, central store and a dispensary. The institute has courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis, cricket, hockey and football grounds.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Jamshedpur Library came into being as an important component of and along with the Non Plan Establishment of the institute in 1960. It continued to provide the services to its students, Teachers, Researchers and other staff members. One of the attractions of this campus is the OVAL structure building which is the Computer Center, which accommodates central computing facilities.
National Institute of Technology - NIT Jamshedpur has the RIT-Regional Institute of Technology Branch of State Bank of India within its campus with special counters to be availed by the staff and students of Institute. The RIT-Regional Institute of Technology Post Office is also situated within the campus which staff and students can avail for all type of postal services. Though the college is residential in nature, it gives its staff and students the facility of a bus service also.
The college has given the students the facility of a dispensary within the campus itself with a male and a female doctor. Apart from this, the students also avail the facility of free check-up and in addition to this free medicines are also provided. Recently, some beds have also been added.

The Training and Placement Department provides facilities to various companies to conduct paper-pencil as well as online tests and interviews for Campus Recruitment for the final year students. A large number of students are usually placed in core as well as software industries.
