National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar, an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. In year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College(REC). Regional Engineering College, Silchar was established in 1967 as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Assam under the administration of a society registered under society registration Act XXI of 1860. The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar was transformed into National Institute of Technology in the year 2002, and bestowed with the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

The multifarious reforms -that are being introduced from then by the reformed Board of Governors, delegated with a greater degree of autonomy for exercising its deliberation over diverse issues pertaining to cardinal matters ranging from academic to extracurricular excellence, are bringing about a tangible difference in the rudimentary paradigm of achieving a high standard in engineering education. Identified as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of India, the National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar is reinventing itself to crush the competition from its cotemporaries in various domains. Very optimistic developmental programs have been undertaken towards modernization of laboratories, computing facilities and library automation. Use of advanced teaching aids and computing facilities provide extensive scope for the students to attain a very high standard required in present day fast changing scenario of technology. National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres {2.43 km2} of land on the outskirts of Silchar amid breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks.

National Institute of Technology-NIT Silcharis a fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys' and two for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 2000 and that of the girls' hostels is 250. Room allotment is done in such a way that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other depicting national integration. A 500 beded state-of-the-art new Men's hostel(of 49.7 crores) is under construction and is to be fully functional from next year onwards. The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar, currently has 60,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs and video tapes.The Central Library at the National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar is privileged to support the institute’s march towards its vision – " To develop the institute into the systematic leader and pivot for excellence in technical education sector and catalyzing absorption, innovation, diffusion and transfer of high technology for improved productivity, quality of life and improved empowerment thereby effecting regional growth."

The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar computing facility includes high-end workstations and Intel Pentium based Personal Computers. All the computing resources of the Institute are connected through a gigabit backbone LAN. The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar has its Internet Access facility through a 2-MBPS leased line circuit from M/S. BSNL and a 64 KBPS SCPC VSAT Link from ERNET. It is planned to enhance the 64 KBPS SCPC VSAT into a 1MBPS DAMA VSAT for additional bandwidth for Internet access during the current year. Faculty members have been provided with a Desktop PC with Internet Connectivity. During the 2006 , Internet connectivity has been extended to Students’ Hostels. The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar has got a sub Post Office within the campus. The sub Post Office has facilities like registration, money order, and speed post.

The workshop of the Mechanical Engineering Department acts as a Central Workshop of the National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar. It has Machine, Wielding, Fitting, Carpentry, Smithy, Pattern making and foundry shops. The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silcharworkshop has Centre Lathes, Turret Lathe, Milling machines (horizontal, vertical & universal), Drilling machines (sensitive, polar & radial), Slotting machine, Grinder Pedestal, Surface Grinder M/C , Tools and Cutter Grinder Shaper machine, Planner machine, Power saw, MIG wielding machine, TIG wielding set, Motor Generator wielding set, Wood Turning Lathe, Electric furnace, Thickness Planner, Smithy Hearth furnace, Shearing machine, Grinding machine, Bench Grinder, Sand Reaming machine, Green Hardness Tester, Sheet Bending machine, Hand Punching machine, Plate Bending machine, Sieve analyzer, Permeability tester etc.

The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar has a playground measuring 150m X 90m with facility for playing football, Cricket, Hockey, and other games. The institute is also planning to construct a mini sports complex for providing various types of outdoor and indoor games to students of this Institute. National Institute of Technology-NIT Silcharalso has a hard court for playing basketball and is provided with hard courts for playing Volleyball and Badminton. It has got a Lawn Tennis court within the campus. Overall, the National Institute of Technology-NIT Silchar has sufficient facilities for games and sports. Besides, the institute has provided space to Indian Metrology Department and Indian Geomagnetic Observatory to set up their laboratories within the campus. Both the organizations are collecting data regularly. A fully computerized full-fledged core-banking branch of State Bank of India operates in the campus. The National Institute of Technology-NIT Silcharstudents, staff and people of the villages surrounding the campus avail the facilities of the branch. A portion of the old LTD building houses general provision stores, PCOs, Fax Centres, DTP centers, bookshop, etc.
