Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati was established in 1954, in the world famous temple town of Tirupati on the sprawling campus of 1000 acres with a panoramic and pleasant hill view. This University stands as a testimony to the wisdom and foresight of great visionaries Late Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Late Sri Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, to cater to the educational needs and aspirations of the people of Rayalaseema area. With a great wisdom, the founder of this University have rightly coined the motto “Wisdom lies in proper perspective” for it. The University has grown excellently from strength to strength over the past fifty-two years, as a premier institute of higher learning under the able and committed leaderships of successive Vice-Chancellors starting from Prof. S. Govindarajulu to the present Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Prabhakar Rao. It has gone through greater strides in the transformation of the University with acquiring necessary and modern sophisticated instrumentation to catch up with the world competition in academic and research programmes.


Right from its inception, the Sri Venkateswara University has been laying more emphasis on teaching, research and extension activities in different subjects. The range of subject departments, courses and research programmes undertaken and promoted during the last fifty-two years reflect the Sri Venkateswara University’s commitment in promoting socially relevant and inter-disciplinary programmes. The University was started with six departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Philosophy. The University has eight constituent colleges concerning various conventional and advanced subject, in order to provide good academic and smooth administrative service to one and all. Besides these colleges, it has a PG centre at Kavali. The Sri Venkateswara University has 58 departments, wherein 71 different PG courses and several Diploma and Certificate courses are being run with a total academic faculty strength of 400 and 1500 non-teaching and a student strength of 5000, including research scholars. Several novel and newly emerging PG courses have also been introduced during this academic year. The University has been moving forwards in achieving academic excellence with a strong commitment and dedicated approach, by clearly setting up of a vision of its own. The initiatives taken by the Vice-Chancellor have already started yielding excellent results, in terms of research funding, extension activities and thus keeping the University on the path of excellence.


The Sri Venkateswara University Computer Centre is established during the year 1984, with the objects to provide services to the students, staff and research scholars of the university. In an University, Computer Centre occupies a Prime Position. It is an active academic place, providing Computational requirements for the entire University Community and a place for Software development activities. It is a nucleus of internet services. It is also undertaking Teaching of Post-Graduate and certificate courses. Sri Venkateswara University Library which was started in the year 1955 to serve the needs of the students, researchers and teachers of the University Colleges, has a total membership of 8,800. Housed in a spacious building with a seating capacity for about 400 readers, the library has 16 professionals and 38 administrative and supporting staff. It has a total collection of 3,43,061 volumes which includes 34,166 bounds volumes of journals and nearly 2,970 theses and dissertations. It currently subscribes to 300 current periodicals at an annual cost of 3.25 lakhs of rupees.


The Sri Venkateswara University provides facilities for a wide range of sports and games. It has a modern gymnasium which is equipped with the latest gymnastic and fitness gadgets like the multigym. The Gym provides facilities for indoor games like shuttle badminton, table-tennis, chess, carroms, besides Weightlifting and malkhamb. The renovated University stadium provides facilities for cricket, foot ball, Hockey and athletics. There are also courts for ball badminton, basket ball, volley ball, tennis, etc. Sri Venkateswara University carries rightly the pride for having been one of the pioneering institutions in impleting the N.S.S. in the country. It was introduced during 1969-70. Starting with 300 volunteers, it has grown into a mighty programme with about 40,000 Volunteers for regular NSS and special camping programmes. The Principal, S.V.U. College of Arts and Sciences is the Chief Warden of the Hostels.Additional Chief Warden has direct control of the hostel administration. He has control over 5 Wardens and 12 Deputy Wardens. Hostel administration collectively looks after the day to day activities of 6 messes and 8 Blocks for S.V.U. College Hostels for Men.


The Sri Venkateswara University Women’s Hostel comprises six blocks which accommodate all categories of women students admitted into S.V.U. College of Arts and Sciences and S.V.U.College of Engineering. Food is served in 4 messes for Research Scholars, Arts and B.Ed. students, Science students and students of S.V.U. Engineering College. The campus creates an environment conducive for activities that reflect Indian culture, heritage and ethos. Activities promoting cultural, emotional, national and communal integration are encouraged. Every year, as a prelude to selecting and sending a team of participants to Inter-University Youth Festivals, our College conducts cultural and literary competitions. The Sri Venkateswara University provides several other services and facilities to the students and staff. A hyperbola shaped magnificent auditorium located centrally in the campus is, in fact, a tourist attraction. With a seating capacity of 2500, it is a fabulous place for conducting conferences, meetings, functions, cultural activities, etc. The Staff Quarters provide adequate residential accommodation to the staff on the campus. Besides the regular post office, the campus has a modern telecom center that provides telephone, fax, e-mail and telegraphic services. The banking needs of the staff and students are met by the branches of the State Bank of India and Andhra Bank. Cafes at convenient locations in the campus cater to the tastes of the inmates and visitors alike.
