Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University and thereafter it became Agriculture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla in July, 1971.
Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry has its origin in erstwhile Himachal Agricultural College and Research Institute, Solan established in 1962 with its affiliation to Panjab University, Chandigarh. The College was raised to the status of Post-graduate College in 1965 when it introduced M.Sc (Agriculture) programmes in some important subjects. With the establishment of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in 1970, This Agriculture Complex further became Horticulture Complex of HPU and Himacahal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (HPKV), Palampur in 1976 and 1978, respectively. On December, 1985 this complex got the recognition of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan named after Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar, the architect of Himachal Pradesh and visionary of Horticulture and Forestry University for the state of Himachal Pradesh. Today, this University has grown into its own kind not only in the country but in whole of Asia with new dimensions of education, research and extension in Horticulture and Forestry. It is playing an important role in increasing horticulture production in the state of Himachal Pradesh in particular and in the country in general.
Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is situated at Nauni 14 Kms from Solan Town on Solan - Rajgarh State Highway. Solan town known as Mushroom city of India is one of the District - headquarters of Himachal Pradesh situated on National Highway No. 22 on Kalka - Shimla Road about 40 Kms from Kalka and 310 Kms from New Delhi. This is also connected by narrow gauge train. Nauni is located at height of 1275 meters above mean sea level.
One of the mandates of the Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is to provide teaching facilities in horticulture, forestry and allied science under mountain perspective of Himachal Pradesh. Similar to other State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), based upon Land Grant System, the university also follows course credit system of student’s education under bifurcation of annual academic session into two semesters. Each semester is spread over duration of 19 weeks along with short duration semester breaks of six weeks each. During semester breaks educational tours and field trainings are organised to expose students to different farming situations.
The entire teaching spectrum of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is broadly divided into a number of courses offered by departments under colleges of horticulture and forestry. These departments are staffed by a sufficient number of scientists and technical staff. Under faculty improvement program the teaching/scientific/ technical staff are free to interact with centres of national and international repute. Each department is a primary unit of education and administration and is entrusted to carry on programs of teaching, research and extension education.
In accordance with the National Education Policy an admission to the under-graduate degree programs viz: B.Sc. (Horticulture) or B.Sc. (Forestry) are based upon entrance test. The test is open for all successful students of 10+2 examination. An important feature of the admission policy is that a minimum of 15 per cent seats at under-graduate level are reserved for students of other States who are nominated by the ICAR on the basis of all India entrance examination and 25 per cent seats at post-graduate level also are reserved for candidates from other states.
The curricular are based on the recommendations of the Dean's Committee Reports of the ICAR and Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). The Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry has adopted the examination system in which subject specific evaluation is done on 50 per cent evaluation basis each by external and internal examinations at under-graduate level. The university has adopted course credit system of evaluation where marks earned by each student are scaled to ten point grading system. University offers UG (.B.Sc.) and PG (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) courses in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and its allied sciences including M.B.A. in Agri-Business. Satyanand Stokes Library of Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, named after Mr. Satyanand Stokes, a native of U.S. who became Indian National and heralded apple revolution in Himachal Pradesh.
Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is a well established modern library catering to the information needs of the academic community of the University. The library initiated the computerization operation in April 1989 and could make significance headway in the application of modern information technology in information management to cope with the ever increasing flow of information. The whole collection of the library is computerized and OPAC is electronically accessible. The most significant development in the library has been the introduction of E.Mail & Internet facilities on January 1, 1998 when the University was brought on Global Network through V-SAT. Faster ISDN connectivity was introduced on March 27, 2003. Later on May 10, 2005, the connectivity was taken from Computer & Instrumentation Centre, through 2 Mbps leased line from BSNL.
The library Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry is housed in a beautiful and modular building which offers excellent environment for study. It has plinth area of 3975 sq. mts. and reading space of 665.60 sq. mts. It has a seating capacity for 326 user’s in common reading area and in cubicles for another 13. This is an open access library. The library has a collection of about 63,000 documents and subscribes over 90 periodicals. The facilities of Book Bank, Inter library loan, document lamination and reprographic services are also available. Library has acquired all important data-bases on CD-ROM such as CAB-CD. HORT-CD, TREE-CD and many other databases relating to horticulture, forestry and allied disciplines. The working hours of the library are from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Multimedia is the integration of text, graphics, sound, animation and video to convey information. The technology savvy library of Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry has established the Multimedia Centre with a total cost of Rs.60 Lakhs funded by ICAR. This Centre was inaugurated by Dr. Mangla Rai, Director General, and ICAR on May 15, 2007. This Centre is equipped with 40 computers out of which 25 computers have internet facilities. Two UPS of 10KVA & 7.5 KVA capacities have been installed in this Centre. One Xerox Phaser 7400 Colour Laser Printer and One Digital Multifunctional Photocopier have been installed for quality printout services. Techfocuz software ver.3.02 has been installed in the CD Mirror Server for storage of VCDs, DVDs, Audio CDs, bootable CDs, e-magazines and e-books CDs. The software enables to search multiple CDs and DVDs together with a single search command for comprehensive search. These products are searchable under network environment by all the users simultaneously.
