Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai was established in 1876, when the Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The institute attained the status of a college in the year 1903 (01.10.1903), when Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai started functioning at Dobbin Hall, Chennai and admitted 20 students for a three-year diploma course called GMVC.

Realizing the importance of education research in animal and fisheries sciences so as to increase its productivity towards better income generation for the resource poor farmers, the government of Tamil Nadu established the first veterinary and animal sciences university in Asia on 20th September 1989 with its head quarters at Chennai with the name Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai. The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi was also made as another constituent college of this university. The mandates of the University are to impart education, to ensure advancement of learning and prosecution of research and to undertake extension to rural people in cooperation with the government departments in different branches of veterinary and animal sciences. It needs emphasis that in recognition of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai credentials, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has accredited this university for a period of five years from 14.8.2001.

Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai is an autonomous institution governed by its Board of Management which regulates the polices of the university in accordance with the provision of act and statues. The Planning Board and the Finance Committee of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai also support the University administration. Residential accommodations for a total strength of 1200 students (Undergraduate and Post-graduate) including girl students are provided in the various college campuses of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai. The normal total strength of inmates at the hostels of the University in the three colleges. The Hostels of the three colleges are being managed by a Warden who is assisted by Deputy Wardens, administrative and other supporting staff. The Hostel Amenities Committee meets once in four months and reviews the functioning of the hostel.

The Central Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai Laboratory was started in the year 1993. This laboratory is unique in the whole country wherein under one roof all disciplines of animal health are available to the farming community, animal product exporter and governmental agencies. Shrimp disease diagnosis laboratory of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai was started in the year 2000 to extend diagnostic services at an affordable cost to the aqua farming community. This laboratory is also involved in generation of database on the status of toxic residues in meat, milk, egg, animal feed and fodder.

This hospital was established in 1.4.1995 as Peripheral Veterinary Hospital and later re-named as Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai Hospital with primary mission to provide quality treatment to pet animals and large animals of suburban area of north madras. The services endorsed good response from all types of animal owner. The hospital located at Madhvaram Milk Colony, under the control of the Unversity. The Hospital is 13 KM away from the famous Madras Veterinary College campus.

Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University - TANUVAS Chennai offers three under graduate courses namely B.V.Sc. and A.H, B.F.Sc., and B.Tech. (Fish Processing Technology); post graduate courses namely M.V.Sc., in 20 Disciplines, M.F.Sc., in 8 Disciplines; and doctoral degree namely Ph.D., (Veterinary) in 19 Disciplines and Ph.D., (Fisheries) in 4 Disciplines. The University also offers various Postgraduate Diploma Courses and M.Phil. in Biotechnology.
