The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University-APAU was established on June 12, 1964 at Hyderabad.The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University-APAU was formally inaugurated on March 20, 1965 by Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. Another significant milestone was the inauguration of the building programme of the University by Late Smt Indira Gandhi, the then Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on June 23, 1966.

The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University-APAU was renamed as Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University on November 7th 1996 in honour and memory of an outstanding Parliamentarian Acharya N.G. Ranga, who rendered remarkable selfless service for the cause of farmers and is regarded as an outstanding educationist, kisan leader and freedom fighter.

The Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University is largely supported by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, which provides 75 to 80 per cent of the finance for conducting research, teaching and extension activities under non-plan and also for specific schemes sanctioned under the State Plan. The non-plan funds are meant to meet the expenditure of the University in respect of schemes and the Colleges transferred from the Government. The Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University is also the recipient of funds from ICAR, Government of India and several other National and International Agencies and industry. Financial assistance by the ICAR, as developmental grants for educational institutions and also for implementing a number of co-ordinated projects, NARP and ad-hoc projects, is also being provided every year.

Ranga Agricultural University takes up Research Schemes financed by the State, National and International Agencies like the ICAR, ICMR, DBT, S & T, NIPPCCD, IFS, Ford Foundation, FAO, UNDP, IDRC, USWA etc.The Acharya N. The Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University is considered as the largest in India with an infrastructure of 9 Colleges, 58 research stations distributed in 9 Agro-climatic zones of the State, 8 Agricultural Polytechnics, 1 Horticultural Polytechnic, 1 Multipurpose Polytechnic, 22 District Agricultural Advisory and Transfer of Technology Centres (DAATTCs), 12 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Farmer Science Centre), one Agricultural Technology and Information Centre (ATIC) and Electronic Media Wing apart from one Extension Education Institute (EEI) and Agricultural Information and Communication Centre ( AI&CC). Thus, it is an unique multi campus University in the country having its units functioning all over the State with the two Faculties of Agriculture and Home Science showing splendid performance of exemplary nature.

TheAcharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University has well-designed multi purpose auditorium of International standards constructed at Rajendranagar Campus during the year 2001. It has sophisticated infrastructure to conduct meetings, seminars, symposia, and international conferences covering a plinth area of 5000 square meters. The main hall of the auditorium can accommodate 1000 delegates. It has two seminar halls with a seating capacity of 160 & 110 and a conference hall of 50 seating capacity. The auditorium is furnished with centralized AC facility of 90 ton capacity. It has a central canteen, a huge banquet hall and space for indoor games. The auditorium is equipped with the latest audio video equipment such as projectors, DTS system, Morten stage lighting system with Computer Control Camera coverage, 70 mm screen in the main hall, including automatic language translation system in one of the seminar halls.

The central library building of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University with a carpet area of 4645 sq. mts., can accommodate over 2 lakhs books and sitting capacity of about 200 readers. Separate library buildings / spacious and functional halls are available at other branch libraries. All the libraries are well furnished with a congenial atmosphere for in-house use of books and periodicals. The Central library is very rich in collection and is fully automated and it has the inter-networking communication links, low cost storage solutions, powerful desktops, workstations, servers and multimedia hardware and software technologies and entered into electronic era. Internet access is provided to students at a cost of Rs.10 per hour.CD-ROM facilities are available in all major campuses with a view to provide access to world agricultural literature.

The Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University has total collection of over 2,00,000 books and subscribes to 500 Indian and foreign periodicals . The Central Library receives 125 copies of ANGRAU Research Journal from the University press to be exchanged with various National and International Institutes.The Agricultural Information and Documentation Centre (AGRIDOC) located in the central Library takes care of information need of the scientists at all the 67 University research stations. The publications include union catalog of periodicals in ANGRAU libraries, agricultural dissertations index, agricultural dissertations abstracts, APAU guidelines of presentation of thesis and "Current Agricultural Titles" backed-up with supply of free photocopies of papers from foreign and Indian periodicals.

The Computer Centre at Rajendra nagar, as a central computing facility of the Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University was established in 1982. The centre is equipped with the latest generation computers and operating on various kinds of Operating systems catering to all computing needs of the University.
