Nabagram Hiralal Paul College – Hooghly was founded on 3rd February 1957 at the initiative of a number of progressive people of the locality, keenly interested in higher education. The area Nabagram started developing after the partition of Bengal, with people coming from East Bengal for settlement. After primary and secondary schools were set up felt the pressing need for a College within the settlement. To help translate this noble venture into a reality the Late Hiralal Paul, a patron of learning came forward with a generous donation towards construction of a building for the College. Dr. B.C. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal kindly laid the foundation stone of the present College building. The Late P. C. sen, the then Food Minister, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. T. C. Dasgupta, an eminent Professor of Bengali of Calcutta University, joined as the founder Principal of the College.
Since this humble beginning with a small building and only 65 students, Nabagram Hiralal Paul College – Hooghly has been making steady progress with the financial assistance of the central and the state Governments and the U.G.C. To-day ours is a full fledged co-educational Degree College, affiliated to Calcutta University with Arts., Science and Commerce streams, accommodating not less than 1500 students. The College got accreditation by NAAC in 2005 at the “B” level obtaining 74% marks signifying its academic and overall excellence. Its celebrated Golden Jubilee year (2006 – 2007) with due honour to its traditions.
Nabagram Hiralal Paul College – Hooghly is situated at Nabagram, Hooghly. The objective of The college is not only to prepare the students for University Examinations but also to help them advance in overall understanding and sensibility through co-curricular activities. Besides carrying out usual academic curricular programmes with all due care and sincerity, the college aims at utilizing all available resources to develop whatever latent skill the students possess in the different fields e.g. sports, N.C.C (Boys & Girls) N.S.S (Boys & Girls) computer operation etc., so that they can face the challenges of a competitive world, earn decent livelihood and be responsible members of society in every respect.
Nabagram Hiralal Paul College – Hooghly has a central library, containing up-to-date texts & journals. Books are issued to the students as per rules and regulation of the library. At a time two books may be issued in the home lending section to Honours students and one to the General Degree students. Books borrowed by the students must be returned to the library within the specified date failing which not only fines may be charged but also disciplinary measures may be taken against the student concerned. Cutting off pages from a book, disfiguring or damaging of books are serious offence and shall be severely dealt with which may go upto the extent of expulsion from the college. Defaulters of tution fees are not allowed to borrow books. Perfect silence must be maintained in the reading room of the library.
Students’ Union organizes Annual Athletic Sports (for boys and girls), inter-class competitions in various outdoor and indoor games like football, cricket, table tennis carom etc. Students of Nabagram Hiralal Paul College – Hooghly take part in many events of the Calcutta University and inter-district tournaments and other games like badminton, volley ball, weight lifting, boxing etc. with remarkable records of success very often. Boys and Girls students have separate Common rooms provided with indoor games facilties like, carom, table tennis, chess etc. Students’ Canteen is under the management of Students’ Union and partly financed by College as subsidy.
