Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair was established in the year 1981. In the same year the UGC has granted permanent affiliation to this College. Thereafter on inception of newly constituted Pondicherry Central University, in the year 1987-88, the affiliation of the College was shifted to it.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) came into existence through Act No. 73 of 1993 of the Parliament and vested with statutory authority for achieving planned and coordinated development of the Teacher Education system throughout the country and it has become mandatory to all the Colleges of Teacher Education to get recognition from this Apex Body on Teacher Education. Accordingly, the TGCE also got its recognition from the NCTE with effect from 1997. Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair which was earlier known as Govt. B.Ed. College was renamed as ‘Tagore Govt. College of Education’ (TGCE) on 14th August, 1998 in a gala function held in the College premises as a part of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of India's Independence.

Although the Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair is in its infancy stage today like a sapling but tomorrow it will grow up into a huge tree, a strong establishment. Today there are only the B.Ed. and trainees of integrated courses as students. But when PG, in-service programmes and Research Courses are introduced then it will come to its full strength. Today Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair stands silently in a corner watching the passing time with a few students walking up and down, but it dreams of a tomorrow, a better tomorrow with the crowds of students laughing and running up and down wiping away this isolation and silence for ever. Every long journey begins with a single step. The enthusiastic staff is ready to undergo any hardship to materialize this dream and the TGCE awakes from its long slumber and turns towards a new era with lots of hopes and dreams.

Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair is located in Middle Point, Port Blair. Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair offers different kind of bachelor and master courses leading to different streams. Apart from Pre-Service Teacher Training Programme in Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair also caters the needs of working people. This College has a full-fledged study centre of Institute of Correspondence Education, University of Madras. During the previous academic year more than 200 candidates obtained spot admission at this centre in different UG and PG courses including MCA and continuing their studies in different faculties of the institute. TGCE has also a centre of examination for Institute of Ecology & Environment; New Delhi It is also an examination centre for admission to RIMC, Dehradun and Sainik School, Purulia.

Campus of Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair has a beautiful campus on the hill top of Middle Point just below the Secretariat Building. It has an area of 3700 sq.ft. With a newly constructed building. The entire area has been developed and fully utilized for various activities. There are two approach roads from the M.G. Road, Middle Point on either side of the New State Library building. A new College building has been inaugurated on 29th April 2004. This building of Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair has all the facilities such as games room, ET lab in the basement floor, reception, science lab, information centre, class rooms, correspondence rooms in the ground floor, administrative block, classrooms, office rooms, record rooms, language lab etc. in the first floor and library cum reading hall, classrooms, staffroom, AV Hall, Computer lab, Research lab etc. in the second floor.

Library of Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair without a library, adequate for its need and size cannot be recognized as a worthy centre of education. A library is the centre of the intellectual life of an educational institution available at all times for reference, for study and for private reading. The TGCE Library has acquired a collection of about 8500 books in a short span of six years that have been of much benefit to the trainees and faculty.

Laboratory of Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair educational Psychology is a basic subject at any level of teacher training. A Psychology lab is very important in any College of Education. The TGCE Psychology lab has been equipped with necessary tools and apparatus for its proper functioning and training of the teacher trainees. Educational Technology plays a vital role in teacher training programme. Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair a well-equipped AV Hall and Educational Technology lab and is under the process of acquiring more equipment for imparting qualitative training. The College has also developed a Language lab to impart better training in language teaching. The required infrastructure for such training is available in this lab. In order to meet the demands of computer education and information technology TGCE has developed a well equipped Computer Centre with internet and other all modern facilities. A General Science Lab is also available to impart training in Science experiments to trainees of Graduate and Postgraduate level. It has been equipped with all modern equipments.

Co curricular activities of Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair are all round development of a student and co-curricular activities are essential for such development. These activities help in the development of 4 H's - Head, Heart, Hand and Health in a student. Psychologically these activities provide outlets for the flow of the energy of the students. This includes seminars, workshops, camps, debates group discussions and celebrations of national important days. Educational tours are also organized for the trainees to visit a few important places in and around Port Blair to gain firsthand experience with the nature and to see how science and technology could be used for the benefit of the Islanders. This is done as a part of off the campus programme. It also includes 5 days camping and other outdoor activities.

Hostel facilities of Tagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair as the teacher trainees hail from different islands which are scattered far and near, there has always been a need to provide a separate hostel for women trainees. This has been met with by constructing a separate building in the Girls School Campus, and christened as “Rani Lakshmi Hostel for Women Teacher Trainees.” It can accommodate 34 women trainees. At present, the men trainees are accommodated in the old building of the College Campus. About 25 students can be accommodated in this building.

Museum ofTagore Government College of Education – TGCE Port Blair also maintains a museum, which is the appreciation and admiration of dignified visitors. Though it is small, but it enables one to peep into the past traditional history of these Islands.
